A Year of Milestones: 70 years, a New Cafe and Our Story Online

We closed our 70th anniversary year with pride, culminating in a joyful and colourful gathering at the Box Hill Town Hall that honoured seven decades of support for adults with intellectual and other disabilities. This milestone reconnected participants, families, staff and supporters to our proud history and enduring mission.

The opening of the AlkiraBiz Café marks an exciting new chapter in our story — one that reflects the same spirit of community, care and opportunity that has shaped Alkira for generations. This vibrant space is more than just a café; it’s a place where skills are built, connections are made, and inclusion comes to life every day.

Our story is one worth preserving. As part of our new website, we’ve created a dedicated History Timeline to showcase the people, events and milestones that have defined Alkira over the years. See the story of Alkira

“To all of you, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I say thank you!”

It has been a challenging twelve months for Alkira, as it has been for nearly every disability service organisation in Australia!

“This year has tested us, but it has also revealed our strength: our people, our values and our purpose.”

Like Peter Holdsworth, I experienced the 2024/25 year as one of both celebration and challenge for Alkira.

Co-Design Core Principles

Inclusivity and Accessibility

Everyone should be heard, respected and able to access the sessions and visuals – no matter how they like to learn.

Empowerment and Engagement

Everyone should feel in charge, take part, feel included, take ownership and proud of the project.

Repetitive Approach

By doing the same thing over and over, helps everyone understand what has to be done and where the project is going.

Feedback Loop

Getting feedback continually throughout the process from everyone involved makes the project better.
