How you can help build the future

Honouring Alkira’s Legacy of Commitment and Care

Our Alkira Foundation

The Alkira Foundation was launched in 2011 to help secure Alkira’s long-term future through structured giving — including donations made during life and gifts left in wills. It was founded with two key goals: to build a lasting fund that would safeguard Alkira’s mission for future generations, and to offer families — especially parents of people with disability — a tangible way to support their loved one beyond their own lifetime.

From the outset, Foundation membership reflected both generosity and foresight. Some supporters made one-off contributions that met the giving thresholds at the time. Others, particularly parents, formalised bequests through their wills — sometimes creating trust arrangements that safeguarded their child’s future and directed any remaining funds to Alkira upon the child’s passing.

These members were more than donors. They were long-term partners in Alkira’s vision — committed to the wellbeing of people with disability at a time when services were less secure and public funding far less predictable.

Today, while Alkira has shifted to a broader fundraising model — focused on general donations and legacy gifts — we remain committed to preserving the spirit of the Foundation. We continue to honour those who made significant commitments through donations or bequests. Their support remains a cornerstone of Alkira’s long-term sustainability.

A well-deserved break for carers

Our Carers

Carers play an essential and often unseen role in the lives of people with disabilities. Whether they are family members, friends, or guardians, carers provide daily support, advocacy, and care — often balancing these responsibilities alongside work, study, or personal commitments. Alkira recognises how important it is to support carers, ensuring that carers take some time for themselves to connect and share information.

Our Carer’s Network is for parents, families and carers to connect in an informal, relaxed and supportive environment – a reminder that it’s okay to take time for yourself.

National Carers Week at Alkira

Each year, during National Carers Week, Alkira proudly takes the time to recognise and thank the carers in our community. As part of this celebration, we host a special relaxation or pampering event — a moment of care for those who are so often focused on others. Whether it’s a massage, a beauty treatment, or simply a peaceful space to unwind, this event is our way of saying thank you for the time, love, and effort carers invest every day. It’s a small gesture of appreciation for the big impact they make.

Recognising the efforts of our volunteers

Our Volunteers

Volunteering at Alkira is open to anyone who wants to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disability. Whether you’re passionate about giving back, eager to share your skills, or bring valuable lived experience of disability, there are many ways you can contribute to our community.

People volunteer for many reasons: to make a difference in others’ lives, strengthen community connections, gain experience, promote personal growth, and discover hidden talents. If you’re ready to get started, we invite you to explore our opportunities and join us in building a stronger, more inclusive community.
