Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) are homes that are specially designed or modified to support people. These properties include accessible features and layouts to enable greater independence, safety, and comfort.
SDA is available to NDIS participants who have SDA funding included in their plan.
Alkira supports people with intellectual disabilities to live more independently through our network of SDA housing properties across Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. Our homes are built or modified to meet the needs of our residents and align with NDIS SDA design standards.
While SDA refers to the housing itself, many residents also receive Supported Independent Living (SIL) from Alkira — this is the day-to-day support provided in the home. Our experienced team delivers personalised assistance with tasks like personal care, cooking, cleaning, and managing routines, tailored to each person’s goals and preferences.
Are you planning to build or renovate a home to support a loved one’s independence?
We’re seeing more families design purpose-built SDA homes, ranging from fully detached dwellings to renovated spaces attached to the family home. Whether you’re at the planning stage or looking for a support provider for an existing build, Alkira can partner with you to deliver quality support services in a home environment that works for you.
We assess each situation individually to ensure the right level of support is matched to the person’s needs, and we’ll work closely with families, builders, and support coordinators throughout the process.
Lovely home in the walkable Box Hill North, close to freeway access. We are taking expressions of interest for 1 private room.
This charming home is specially designed for NDIS participants with SDA or SIL Funding. Support ratio is 1:5, and the home comes with access to Alkira’s fleet of buses for transport to day services and weekend outings.
Current residents are 35-70 years old and enjoy sharing dinner together.
Please note:
For some homes that are owned by external housing providers, such as the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), the application process may include additional steps. We’ll guide you through the specific process based on the property you’re interested in.
Living independently in an SDA requires NDIS SDA and SIL funding. If that’s not yet in your Plan, we may place you on our waitlist.
We assess your goals, daily living needs, and compatibility with potential housemates.
Before finalising placement, we’ll organise a friendly meeting with the current residents to ensure it’s a good fit.
