Thank You to Peter Harrison for Going the Distance
When it comes to commitment, few people go as far — literally and figuratively — as Peter Harrison.
In 2024, long-time Alkira Board Director and former President and Chairperson Peter took on an extraordinary personal challenge: cycling more than 2,500km from Rome to Paris — and then all the way to England — to raise funds for Alkira’s newest social enterprise, the AlkiraBiz Cafe in Box Hill. It was a bold and generous act that captured hearts and raised an incredible $33,000 to support the café’s fit-out and launch.
Peter’s journey was about much more than kilometres. With over 40 years of service to Alkira — including seven as Chairman — his ride symbolised a deep, personal commitment to creating opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. The AlkiraBiz Cafe is now up and running, providing employment training and real-world barista experience to our participants in a supportive and inclusive environment.
Throughout his 45-day ride, Peter inspired countless people through his fundraising blog Wheelie Harro, sharing daily updates, reflections, and photos from the road. His story brought attention to the importance of meaningful employment pathways for people with disability — and introduced Alkira’s mission to new audiences across the globe.
Peter officially retired from the Alkira Board at the end of 2024, leaving behind an incredible legacy of leadership, service, and heartfelt generosity.
From everyone at Alkira — thank you, Peter, for going the extra mile for our community. Quite literally.
