Alkira’s Cinema Squad Enters Focus on Ability Film Festival

Focus on Ability Film Festival 2025 Documentary Entry

For the first time ever, Alkira’s very own Cinema Squad has entered a national short film competition, and we couldn’t be more proud!

The team has submitted their original short film This Was The Way into the Focus on Ability Film Festival, a celebration of the talents and contributions of people with a disability. The festival encourages the community to shift their focus from limitations to possibility, and that’s exactly what the Cinema Squad set out to do.

This Was The Way is a short film that tells the story of Ben – a participant at Alkira and a proud member of the Cinema Squad. The film captures who Ben is: his optimistic personality, his creativity, and how he contributes to the community through his passion for making feel-good music. With thoughtful storytelling in an interview style,  the film is a snapshot of Ben’s journey into music creation on YouTube. The 5 minute video touches on challenges Ben overcame and his determination to learn and go out of his comfort zone whilst battling against other’s negativity towards his ideas.

The Cinema Squad has worked tirelessly to meet the competition deadline. From storyboarding and scripting to filming. Entering the Focus on Ability festival is a huge milestone, and we’re excited to be part of a platform that promotes authentic, positive stories led by people with disability.
