For decades, Alkira participants have proudly supported Meals on Wheels Victoria, helping to deliver more than just nutritious meals to older Australians. They deliver connection, care and reassurance.
Each week as a part of an Alkira program, participants volunteer within the Whitehorse Council area, playing an important role in supporting the health and wellbeing of local community members. Through meal deliveries, participants provide friendly social interaction and a valuable wellbeing check, helping older people remain independent and connected to their community.
More recently, participants have expanded their involvement beyond deliveries, becoming part of the full Meals on Wheels process. After completing delivery rounds, they return to assist behind the scenes with essential tasks such as cleaning, returning trolleys, labelling items, emptying bins and sanitising work areas. These responsibilities are vital to keeping the service running smoothly and safely.
Through this hands-on experience, participants develop a wide range of skills, including teamwork, time management, responsibility and workplace communication. They also gain confidence in following processes, working in a structured environment and contributing to a larger community service.
Importantly, this program highlights the meaningful contribution people with disability make within their local community. Supporting Meals on Wheels not only benefits those receiving meals but also empowers participants to build independence, learn practical skills and take pride in giving back.
