Nickson is a student in Alkira’s Momentum program, where he is building the skills, confidence and experience needed to support his transition into adult life, further education and employment. Now in his second year of the three‑year program, Nickson has already reached an exciting milestone, he has secured a volunteer role within his local community.

Momentum is designed for school leavers with intellectual and other disabilities who want to further their education with TAFE. Momentum students receive support both in the classroom and beyond to encourage their growth in confidence and independence. Delivered from Box Hill Institute’s Nelson Road Campus, the program places Alkira participants alongside thousands of other students completing accredited courses, creating an inclusive, real tertiary education experience.

Confidence in action

Nickson is currently studying Certificate I in Work Education at Box Hill Institute. This course supports him to develop foundational workplace skills, understand employment expectations and build readiness for real‑world work environments.

Alongside his studies, Nickson has taken an important step forward by securing a volunteer position at Salvos Mitcham, where he volunteers fortnightly. This opportunity reflects Nickson’s growing confidence, reliability and willingness to contribute meaningfully to his community. Volunteering provides Nickson with hands‑on experience in a workplace setting, helping him practise communication, teamwork and responsibility while building a sense of purpose and belonging.

Nickson’s volunteer role is a significant achievement and a proud moment for everyone supporting his journey. It highlights not only his personal growth but also the value of the Momentum program in creating real, achievable pathways for young adults with disability.
