Peter Holdsworth, Chairperson
During the 2024/25 year, Alkira supported more than 240 participants through our Community Support, Home Support, Support Coordination and Transport programs.
Although we should all be proud of that achievement, it has been a challenging twelve months for Alkira, as it has been for nearly every disability service organisation in Australia!
Due to restrictive NDIS service pricing arrangements, many of these organisations recorded significant financial losses, forcing some to cease operations entirely. Alkira has not been immune to that impact, and our financial report shows a deficit of just over $1 million for the 2024/2025 year, which was covered by reserves accumulated over prior years. However, the Board understands that recording financial deficits is neither sustainable nor acceptable, and it is determined to ensure that Alkira continues to provide high-quality services but in cost-effective ways.
Accordingly, I can report that the Board has commissioned a comprehensive external review of our service delivery model that will enable us to find new and more effective ways to deliver our programs in financially viable ways. In addition, we will continue to lobby the Commonwealth Government to adopt more reasonable financial arrangements through our involvement with the peak disability advocacy organisation, National Disability Services.
I want to thank and congratulate my fellow board directors for their service and governance of our organisation over this past year. Each gives their time and expertise freely and generously. While they receive no financial compensation, I know that each of them is rewarded by knowing that they are part of a larger team that is making a positive difference in the lives of our participants.
During the year, we farewelled long-serving Director Peter Harrison, who retired from the Board after an extraordinary 47 years of service. Peter’s leadership and wisdom have shaped Alkira for nearly half a century — a rare and immeasurable contribution. We were honoured to celebrate his remarkable service at our 70th Anniversary Gala in October 2024. I also extend our heartfelt thanks to Di Bassett, whose 20 years of service have left a lasting mark on Alkira’s journey, and to Kate de Josselin, who also stepped down during the year, for her contribution.
Our CEO, Julia Canty-Waldron, has again demonstrated outstanding leadership and dedication over the past year, as have the members of her leadership team. Of course, our employees, volunteers, and supporters have continued to ensure that our participants can access the best possible range of services. To all of you, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I say ‘thank you’!
