Supported Independent Living (SIL)

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living is support provided to you in your home (whether you rent or own your home) or in a home owned or run by Alkira (Specialist Disability Accommodation). The support can be either individualised, shared with others, or a combination of the two depending on your circumstances.

 

Our highly skilled staff support you to live as independently as possible and assist with things like:

  • Developing skills so that you can be as independent as possible
  • Preparing meals
  • Shopping
  • Gardening
  • General household tasks
  • Personal care
  • Getting out and about in the community
  • Developing and maintaining friendships and family connections.
  • Accessing social and recreational activities.
  • Managing accommodation and tenancy obligations.
  • Managing your health
  • Managing your money
  • Using public transport

Who can access SIL?

Anyone with an intellectual disability between the ages 18 and 65 can access our SIL services. SIL in an Alkira house is subject to availability, suitability and appropriate NDIS funding for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

This DFFH owned SDA property is fully accessible and features two 3 bedroom units under the one roof. Each unit comprises a kitchen, a fully accessible bathroom with a bath, living and dining areas and a laundry. The units are joined with a staff sleepover office with ensuite in between.

This Alkira owned SDA property is a basic single storey home which has 4 bedrooms plus an additional staff sleepover office with ensuite. The vacant bedrooms are at the rear of the property near the bathroom and laundry, and close to the staff sleepover. There is a kitchen, meals area, separate lounge room, as well as an outdoor entertaining area.
