Alkira’s School Leavers Employment Support (SLES) program is a structured, two-year, NDIS-funded employment readiness program designed for school leavers aged 18*–24 with goals related to finding work. Delivered in a group-based format, SLES helps young adults build community, life, and job-related skills in a supportive environment — making it a great stepping stone after high school.
At Alkira, we give participants the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through AlkiraBiz, which includes our social enterprise café, coffee trailer, and op shop. These real work environments allow participants to explore hospitality and retail pathways before committing to long-term employment goals.
By trying different roles, participants build confidence, learn workplace expectations, and make informed decisions about their future careers.
Alkira’s SLES curriculum is designed to support young people in building practical, everyday skills that lead to greater independence and job readiness.
Participants practice resume writing, interview techniques, communicating effectively in the workplace, and present themselves appropriately for different job settings.
We focus on important everyday skills like time management, organisation, money handling, and budgeting. Participants also practice travel training to help them navigate public transport independently.
Participants explore roles and responsibilities within a workplace, learn about employee rights, and develop teamwork and problem-solving skills. Regular visits to local businesses offer insight into different industries, real-world expectations and networking opportunities.
