As we move to 2022, we can reflect on this year and how participants rose above these challenges, how they continued to look forward, and how many of them took the changes in their stride and continued to achieve their personal goals and dreams. The motivation and successes of Alkira participants, despite the difficult circumstances, has truly been an inspiration.

Despite being a little tired of online classes, Momentum and Pathways students have had a progressive year in their studies. We have seen participants achieve their goals – getting their driver’s license and gaining employment

Independent Living Skills progressed through one-on-one supported programs and in Alkira’s residential setting. This year saw many interesting meals with diverse ingredients explored and new dishes mastered.

Undeterred by the lengthy lockdown, Alkira residents shared games and activities within their household, taking advantage of their space at home to create new experiences and enjoy their time together.

When the weather was nice residents had solo and group activities outdoors. For entertainment residents held movie nights with their housemates and they also got creative with a scarecrow competition across all Alkira houses.

Looking forward to next year, it will be a great year, but it will be a recovery year as friendships are rebuilt, routines re-established and the community completely reopens. For us, we were initially supported to keep operating with the Federal Government’s JobKeeper, however, with that financial safety net no longer available and our inability to provide our normal level of support, we have seen a reduction in income.

As we move into 2022, we welcome Richard Dent OAM as our new CEO. He brings extensive experience in the disability sector and his own values align strongly with Alkira’s. We thank Lisa Sawatzky for her 13 years at Alkira and positive changes she has made, and we wish her all the best with her recovery.

We welcome your support as we rebuild our services and resume support to participants and reconnect with our community. If you can at this time, please consider donating to our year end appeal or a regular monthly donation to Alkira. Your ongoing support enables us to plan our resources better knowing there is a continual flow of funding.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Gungshi Shin Nien, Gung Hay Fat Choy and Happy Hanukkah.
